S410 -Day #14

Starter for Ten - April 19th 2023

Last week I had a conversation with Shan, he asked me if I knew where he could get stock images of wounds and spots for a project he is working on. I laughed and told him this wasn’t something I was an expert in (I’m notoriously squeamish). It made me wonder about skin experts, do they love their jobs? This idea made it into today’s writing.

Ten minutes of free writing.

I found inspiration on my desk in the VS+YO studio for todays visual, the hoptimist! Created in the late 60’s by Gustav Ehrenreich they are designed to bring joy and a smile to everyone.

First sketches: Black felt tip

My first quick sketch was in black and white and I attempted to capture the hoptimist both still and in movement. Then I decided to get a bit more abstract.

Second sketch: One continous line

Third sketch

For the next set of sketches I wanted to loosen up and see if I could capture some movement. I experimented with a continuous line drawing and drawing multiple versions on top of each other.

Sketch: Three coloured felt tip pens

You can see I started to have fun, for one sketch I had three pens in my hand and drew with them at once to get the feeling of the bounce. Then I went back to drawing loosely in colour.

These ten minutes were the most fun so far! I didn’t judge myself while drawing and I went with my instincts and approached the task with a playful attitude. I’m excited to draw again tomorrow.

Ten minutes of sketching for joy

Starter for Ten (S410) is a daily creative exercise that I will do for the next 30 days. I set a ten-minute timer and write whatever comes into my head. After that I do the same to create a visual. The idea is to loosen up, create daily and get over the idea that everything I make needs to be perfect or have a purpose.

I will document the process here on this site and on my Instagram stories. Photos will be unedited to keep it real. This challenge both terrifies and excites me, let’s see what happens.
