S410 -Day #21

Starter for Ten - April 25th 2023

Experiments don’t always end with the result you are expecting. Today’s freewriting went better than I expected, but the visual not so much.

Ten minutes of free writing.

After writing about the runner I had an instant idea to create a graphic image of a trainer. The plan was to quickly sketch, create a mask using washi tape and paint over it so that when the washi tape was removed there would be a white outline of the graphic. The plan was solid but I underestimated how long it would take.

Sketch: pencil outline with washi tape mask

Ten minute result

Ten minutes got me almost the outline in tape. I decided to press on as I was excited about this one. I finished the tape, covered it in paint and used some paper to squish down all of the ink.

On reflection this looks quite interesting and I should have stopped here but I wanted to learn if the mask had worked. I started to remove the washi tape and quickly learned my mistake, the washi tape stuck too well to the paper and ripped it in places. The paint also managed to get under the tape in places and the end result, well, not my vision.

I had hoped the white would have more contrast and be visible. In a huff, I took a big paint pen and painted over the masked areas in an attempt to save the experiment. Not happy with the result but I enjoyed the process and that’s the goal!

Starter for Ten (S410) is a daily creative exercise that I will do for the next 30 days. I set a ten-minute timer and write whatever comes into my head. After that I do the same to create a visual. The idea is to loosen up, create daily and get over the idea that everything I make needs to be perfect or have a purpose.

I will document the process here on this site and on my Instagram stories. Photos will be unedited to keep it real. This challenge both terrifies and excites me, let’s see what happens.
