S410 -Day #23

Starter for Ten - April 28th 2023

The inspiration for today’s story came from a book. I wasn’t sure how to start so I picked up a book, turned to a random page and used the first part of a sentence. He was on the verge of nodding off…

Ten minutes of free writing.

After writing the first two sentences I had a clear vision that the man was Santa. I think the ghost smell was Mrs Claus, no idea why she’s dead or why Santa is on the last train home with the drunks. It’s weird what comes out in freewriting sometimes!

Ten minute sketch: oil pastels

Vicki and I have been working on branding for a nursery and this was on my mind before starting to draw today. I decided to see if I could create a super simple sketch for each letter of the alphabet in ten minutes. A for apple, B for Bee, C for Cat. It started so easily, then I went for a duck for D, why not a dog? No idea! I got stuck at G and skipped it, same with I and J. My mind was blank, this was harder than I thought!

You can see where I got to, I missed out I, N, Q and R and ran out of time at T. This was a fun one though and using pastels was like using crayons again.

The cat was my favourite.

Also into the octopus even if it does look slightly upset.

Starter for Ten (S410) is a daily creative exercise that I will do for the next 30 days. I set a ten-minute timer and write whatever comes into my head. After that I do the same to create a visual. The idea is to loosen up, create daily and get over the idea that everything I make needs to be perfect or have a purpose.

I will document the process here on this site and on my Instagram stories. Photos will be unedited to keep it real. This challenge both terrifies and excites me, let’s see what happens.
