S410 -Day #26
Starter for Ten - May 1st 2023
What a difference a good night’s sleep makes, I’m feeling brighter today and decided to raid my husband’s record collection for inspiration. Choosing a record at random, I used the image on the back cover to kickstart the ten minutes of freewriting. Then I played the record while drawing to create the visual.
The record I selected was the Shibuya Connection EP by Dimitri from Tokyo, I had never heard it before and guessed it was going to be some weird dark techno. Wrong! The reflection of the neon light shining on the brick wall kickstarted my imagination for the writing challenge.
Ten minutes of free writing.
After writing I played on the record, you can listen to it on Spotify here. This is the first time during the 30-day challenge that I have listened to music while creating. I started with the track Toujours l’amore, it sounded a lot friendlier than I expected and weirder, I think the girls in the story would be into it.
The vocals start with love, so I quickly decided to sketch that out and tried to make the ‘v’ look a bit like a heart. I added a plus symbol to represent when the singer says love, love, and love. I then added the pattern by moving the pen in the way that the music prompted me.
Ten minute sketch: chunky felt tip pens and black posca pen
I like where the result went, it would look cool on a white tee or sweatshirt, maybe I will make one by using evolving the concept and painting directly onto the fabric.
Starter for Ten (S410) is a daily creative exercise that I will do for the next 30 days. I set a ten-minute timer and write whatever comes into my head. After that I do the same to create a visual. The idea is to loosen up, create daily and get over the idea that everything I make needs to be perfect or have a purpose.
I will document the process here on this site and on my Instagram stories. Photos will be unedited to keep it real. This challenge both terrifies and excites me, let’s see what happens.
